Michelle S. Drummond

MICHELLE S. DRUMMOND was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica in 1976 to young parents who at the time were in their prime of figuring out who they were and what they wanted out of life. At an early age, her humble upbringing influenced her pursuits in life. That drive led her to focus on academia and playing field hockey in Jamaica, which carved the path to where she is today.

A former member of the Jamaica Women’s Hockey Team, Michelle was introduced to field hockey at the age of 11 years old at St. Andrew High School (for girls) and has represented Jamaica in various events internationally, since the age of fifteen (15). As a matter of fact, in 1995 she was the first Jamaican national to have been offered an academic scholarship to study at the St. Lawrence University in Upstate, New York and simultaneously represent the University through field hockey at National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Conferences.

Selected teams and international events participation included U21 Jamaica Women’s National team, World Cup Qualifier, Caracas, Venezuela ‘92, Jamaica Senior Women’s National Team, Central American and Caribbean Games, Ponce, Puerto Rico, ’93 and Jamaica Senior Women’s National Team, Pan American Games, Mar Del Plata, Argentina, ’95.

An avid field hockey player, Michelle has actively been involved in mentorship and coaching throughout her field hockey career. She prides herself in being a role model to aspiring and seasoned field hockey players. Michelle has played competitively at the club level nationally, the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. She has performed as Assistant Field Hockey coach to athletes at various levels and institutions to include students Marymount School in Manhattan, New York and Trinity College in Washington, D.C. Her coaching resume also includes mentoring aspiring athletes at different ages for the United States Field Hockey (USFH) Futures Program through MavSports, Inc. In the past five years, Michelle has relocated to the South Florida area where she continues to play field hockey on a regular basis recreationally.

In addition to being a passionate field hockey player, Michelle is a self-taught contemporary mixed media fiber artist who works professionally in the creative arena. She sculpts and creates 3-dimensional forms by manipulating multicolored, multi-weighted fiber, glue, and acrylic paint on and off wood panel. On March 9, 2022, the City of West Palm Beach commemorated a permanent public artwork installation, “The Metamorphosis”, created by Drummond in the Urban Living Room at Mandel Public Library. This public art was commissioned by the City of West Palm Beach and minted Drummond as the first Black female artist to have received this award.
Another public artwork by Michelle, a multi-colored fiber enhanced 6-foot sailfish spinner, can be viewed along East Ocean Avenue on the path to the Boynton Harbor Marina, Boynton Beach, Florida.

Michelle’s CV also includes solo exhibitions at Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, October- December 2022, Cornell Art Museum and Pompano Beach Cultural Center in 2020.
